Think of Christian reading as a spiritual discipline. Most often, we think of spiritual disciplines as practices such as fasting. Sabbath observance, or solitude. Dallas Willard, in his book The Spirit of the Disciplines, reminds us that there are also disciplines of engagement, such as Bible study, prayer, corporate worship, and small group ministries. Reading Christian books should be included among the disciplines of engagement. With the same discipline it takes to commit to Bible study or prayer, we should implement a plan for reading Christian books as a part of our daily schedule.
